“Printed and Posthumous: Shakespeare’s Monumental Book”

Shakespeare was buried with a spare gravestone. Seven years later, a more elaborate memorial appeared with the first posthumous collection of his texts, William Shakespeares Comedies, Histories, & Tragedies. This book, now known as the First Folio, has become a monument to the Bard. The volume itself may be seen as a memorial to him, although it is also a commercial endeavor of its compilers, editors, printers, and publishers. This talk will explain why and how the First Folio achieved its fetishized importance, and why we should continue to tell the stories of the other books that comprise Shakespeare’s legacy. Adam G. Hooks is an associate professor of English at the University of Iowa. His most recent book is Selling Shakespeare: Biography, Bibliog- raphy, and the Book Trade (Cambridge, 2016).
